Carpool and Rideshare
Sharing a ride to campus cuts your fuel and parking costs, and it's a solid way to meet people commuting from your neighborhood.
Fill out our interest form and we'll match you with other WWU employees in your area.
Carpool
A carpool is 2–5 people who share a personal vehicle to get to campus.
- Flexible by design — groups set their own terms for pickup times, driving rotation, and splitting fuel/parking costs
- Best fit: people commuting from the same area with similar schedules
- Parking: carpool permits get preferred spots in 11G or 17G, or a discounted rate in 12G
Rideshare (Vanpool)
Rideshare uses a rented van through WTA or Skagit Transit — more structured than a carpool, with a formal agreement and a monthly fare.
- Group size: 7–15 people, ideal for commuters coming from outside Bellingham
- Requirements: WTA requires a 7-person group with at least 5 riders per trip on average
- Cost: flat fare per van based on your home county — fuel, maintenance, and insurance included. More riders = lower cost per person.

Find a Ride & Explore Your Options
Not sure where to start? These tools can help you find a carpool partner or explore what a car-free commute could look like from your neighborhood.
Fill out our short interest form using your WWU email. Transportation Services will use the information you provide to match you with other WWU employees who have also completed the form. There are likely many other employees in your neighborhood, so please fill out the form even if you're unsure.
Another option is to join RideshareOnline.com, a program managed by WSDOT. Once you create an account, you can input your start location, finish location, and commute times to search for matches. This option is open to people outside WWU.
All of Bellingham's neighborhoods have numerous options for commuting to and from campus. These maps show estimated commute time to campus for walking, biking, bussing, and driving, to help you decide which option makes the most sense.

Carpool Safety
We only match you with other WWU employees, but use your own judgment too:
- Drivers: be well-rested, never drive after drugs or alcohol
- Meet in a public place before agreeing to ride together
- Tell a friend or family member your trip plans
- Bring a charged phone, and exchange emergency contact, license, and insurance info
- Ask for references if you're meeting someone new
- Pick a public, high-traffic spot for pickup/drop-off
Commute Support
Employees may be allowed to compress their work week or flex their schedules to take advantage of carpooling or bus riding opportunities. Teleworking may also be an option. Check with your supervisor to see what's supported by your department.
Common Questions
If you can't join your carpool on a particular day, no problem. All WWU employees can still sign up for a pay-by-day parking permit for when you need to drive alone and the free employee bus pass can also help you get home when your plans change.
If something unexpected comes up while at work, WTA and Smart Trips offer free Emergency Ride Home for all WTA pass holders or Whatcom Smart Trips members on days you arrive to work via carpool or Rideshare. Call 360-676-RIDE and a WTA customer service representative will book a taxi free of charge up to three times per calendar year.
Employee carpool assignments are available in lots 11G, 17G, and 12G.
To qualify for a carpool parking permit, you must meet the following criteria and rules:
- Arrive to campus with at least 2 people on every trip, if you are the carpool permit holder and you don't have anyone riding with you, you must park in 12G.
- Designate one carpool member as the permit holder.
- Register every car's license plate that will be commuting to campus as a carpool vehicle; please not that only one vehicle is allowed to park at a given time.
- Ensure each member reads and signs an agreement to comply with the carpool policy.
- The non-primary carpool permit holders may purchase pay-by-day permits (free to obtain, discounted daily charge to park).
Only valid carpools may park in carpool lots. On days when special circumstances prevent carpool members from riding together, the carpool permit holder may park alone and follow the appropriate procedures below:
- Carpool members driving alone must park in parking lot 12G.
- Employee carpool permits are honored in lot 12G with no call-in necessary.
Instances of parking alone will be monitored to ensure that the carpool system is not being abused.
